Loren Feldman/Tech Nigga at Last Night's Mobile Monday

I was at last night's Mobile Monday New York, which was a well coordinated event at the Samsung Experience Center in the Time Warner Center.

The subject of the event was the future of mobile video. One of the topic's that came up was monetizing mobile video. So there were five panelists, including VP Content & Business Development – Mobile, NBC Universal, USA, and more importantly, at least for this article, Loren Feldman from 1938 Media.

Loren Feldman. Tech Nigga

Now I am not going to get into the merits of Loren's perspectives, which you can imagine I might take umbrage with. They have been dissected pretty well here. Here are a couple more videos that do a good job of providing context for the kind of reputation Feldman has developed for himself.

Loren Feldman: Black People Can't Get It together

Loren Feldman: Black People Are Lame

In any case, regardless of what you think of Feldman's perspective, a bigger issue leapt front and center. It was odd watching, as Loren sat, normalized by the credibility of the other panel members. That oddness was heightened as the discussion turned to how mobile video was going to be monetized.

The loop that kept running through my head was, who in the world is going to advertise with Loren Feldman? Can you imagine... the Intel "tones" followed by "Tech Nigga, brought to you by Intel." Or perhaps the McDonalds logo with a voice over, "Tech Nigga, I'm Lovin' it."

I am sure some of you will rightly accuse me of a failure of imagination. But somehow, I'm just not seeing it.

Well, presuming this is really Loren (which isnt certain since the profile does not link to anything public) that was quite a fast response.

One question... who are these advertisers and where are they placed. I dont see them on 1938media.com or in your videos. Did I just miss it?

Oh, and one more thing. Presuming this really is Loren, or actually, whoever you are, since I am quite suspicious, don't patronize me you idiot. I don't speak that way, and I am not your "bro."

It's conversational marketing. You don't even realize it is there man. Im living large and in charge. Word.

I'd buy anything that had a picture of the techrooster on it ! He's the only rooster in tech :)

One more thing my man. Get a real black mans name would ya. Hard to be all up and militant and shit with the name Hank Williams. Word.

1938 Media said...

One more one more thing, no balls to come up and say hi huh my man? Maybe you're one of those tiny brothers like Spud Webb. Peace out.

Hank Williams said...

Ah yes. My name is not black enough. I see. I'm sure I don't talk or write black enough either. Is that another problem with "us people"? I guess I am not "keepin it real". Perhaps I need to go out and buy some gold jewelry and a bucket of kentucky fried chicken.

And it was my obligation to walk up to you and tell you what I think of you in order to demonstrate I have "balls"? Yeah right. Play right into your stereotype... and get arrested for assault when you provoke an actual confrontation. Sure that would be smart. (hint: I'm *not* tiny)

Oh and by the way... who are those sponsors?

1938 Media said...

Why would you get arrested for assault? That fiery black temper huh? And no you do not write black enough, and please change your name immediately. How can you be all afro-centric with the name Hank Williams, I mean it's embarrassing. How about a nickname of some sort like Puffy? We can call you H.Willie. That's dope sounding. Peace out H. Willie.

Can't we all just get along?

Ahhh I see Loren is back up to his antics. Hank, I agree with your post and am also very interested in learning who in their right mind would sponsor someone such as this and risk damaging whatever brand they have developed. Furthermore, Loren if you do anything at all please try and be consistent. Your comments here are taunting though at SxSW you lacked that and even left the "Where Are the Black Tech Bloggers" Panel early. Determine who you are (Bigot,Comedian, Racist, Punk, ect.) before you determine what others are.

So you take "umbrage" (what the hell are you, 500 years old?) with Loren's stances, opinions, and videos, then play the racist card. You follow it up with two videos (neither of which he made), one of which he says some pretty thought provoking things, and the most you can follow it up with is some snarky remarks about McDonalds?

Are you serious?

I know it's rough to have no one have any clue who you are, but despite your "umbrage" with Loren's opinions, you don't actually refute any of them, you just make fun of them. The fact that you didn't man up and say hi to Loren because you might be "arrested for assault" is ridiculous.

A provoked assault?

What, are you too damn stupid to keep your hands to yourself?

I'd be very careful to assume that just because someone uses the name 1938media that it's Loren. There are tons of Scobles and Le Meurs and Fakes Steve Jobs around.

Please be careful to not get lured into a fight that isn't there.

Hank Williams said...

vinny,

Just one question is posed by this article. Who are the advertisers.

Hank Williams said...

anonymous,

at first I was concerned it might not be Loren. But he has posted on twitter.

1938 media said...

Well, heck, if he posted on twitter it must be him.

H. Willie,
I told you my man, it's baked into the shit, it's so smooth you dont even see it, it's baked in brother, baked in. Real conversational shit dig? I'd tell you who but then you would call Sharpton and go all boycotting my ass. Peace out H.Willie

1938 Media said...

H. Willie,
Yo as my man Vinny has stated you post some vids I didn't even make. Yo what up with that H.?

Im building a brand my man, my customer expects a certain grade of product. Dig? You stepping on it and cutting it up with your shit is only confusing the customer.

It appears that 1938 Media commenting here is not Feldman. The commenter is in San Francisco. Since it is unlikely Loren got to California so quickly, particularly when he is based in NY it is highly likely that this person is a fraud. Sorry for believing this was you Loren.

Glad to hear that you tracked the IP. It's too facile to put a bunch of labels on Loren. And too easy for someone to spoof an address.

Hi folks, there seems to be a growing culture of folks who like Loren who are getting advertisor dollars to target people of color with hate speech.

I propose that those of us who want to see it stop come together and leave your info with ARM(Anti Racism Movement) @ Fireboblonsberry@rocus.org as we organize proactively against any sponsor who aligns themselves with garbage. Together we can make a difference and end this disgusting culture of arrogance and audacity.

Hope to hear from you soon. Verizon also sponsors Bob Lonsberry who targets children of color with hateful racist tirades. We have collected a list of sponsors who need to hear from us.Don't forget to shoot us a note.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention. I strongly disagree with Loren's method of bringing this to the level of public discourse, but I think he is bringing up a valid point. Where in the Web 2.0 world are black people? Where is the black Leo Laporte, Kevin Rose, Robert Scoble? If the only knowledge of earth came from the "internet famous scene", then I would think the world was full of white men with one or two "tech babes" like Veronica Belmont and Natali del Conte thrown in for visual splash.

I think one problem is that a lot of black people in the technology game are working in walled gardens. I set up an online community at www.AfriTechnology.com to help solve this issue. I think if we are aware of each other and can work together, then we can rise together to become more visible and have more influence.
