Gartner Agrees... RIP Windows
A bunch of people thought I was off base in claiming that things like Adobe AIR and Webapps are going to kill windows. It appears that now Gartner agrees. I am not saying that they are always right. In fact they say some wacky things sometimes. But hey it ain't just me saying this stuff.

Different point of view by one KDE developer.
"So, what is the deal here? It is simple. Microsoft is starting to prepare people that Windows 7 will not be compatible with older version. As this might be a shock to a lot of people, Microsoft needs to educate people why it is needed. It will be hard to sell that /all/ existing windows software will simply not run anymore on Windows 7. We could already have read that it won't be compatible.
And that's where Gartner kicks in. Nothing better then some 'independent' analysts telling that Microsoft is doomed and that there need to be radical changes. In a later stage Microsoft can announce the incompatibility and refer to this Gartner statement. And Gartner can again publish in a few years how Microsoft succesfully avoided the crisis."

We will see who is right soon =)
I'm sure IT departments would LOVE to no longer have to employ a small army of people to maintain thousands of individual Windows installations throughout the enterprise. The impetus there must be huge. I know that five years ago, the ERP app Peoplesoft (now Oracle) was rolling out a web-based version as a way to save customers money and increase central control. This sounds like an CTO's wet dream, eliminating client-based apps. I remember hearing a VP getting all misty-eyed talking about the coming "network appliance" revolution. That was back in the late '80's, though. Maybe the time is finally right.
