OT: Race In Appalachia
David Gergen is a republican commentator that served in the Clinton White House. I have always had enormous respect for him as a straight shooting honest man. And nothing could be more honest than what he says in the above video about the Clintons. As background, in Kentucky, West Virginia and elsewhere in and near Appalachia, twenty percent of the voters in exit polls admitted that race was the reason they were voting against Barack Obama.
Gergen calls for Hilary to denounce the racist vote and to say that if that is the reason you are voting for me I don't want your vote. Wow.
I tend to be pretty hard on the younger generation. I think they have an extraordinary sense of entitlement. Among other things it manifests itself in cavalier attitudes around things like plagiarism, expecting high grades in school when undeserved, and indeed, music piracy.
But I must say, on the issue of race, I am extraordinarily happy to say that there is little racism in the younger generation. It appears that in thirty or forty years when all the racist bastards die off, we will really be able to start again. Unfortunately, we are not there yet, and Bill and Hillary Clinton seem perfectly happy to pour salt in the wound just to get elected. It appears all their historical work in the civil rights arena was nothing more than a political calculation around a powerful monolithic voting block.
What Gergen suggests would be a welcomed move towards repairing their horribly damaged image that they have created for the rear view mirror of history. But knowing what I now think I know about Bill and Hilary, such a gracious and proper move is almost inconceivable.

Hank, I couldn't agree with you more, and bravo to Gergen for saying what needed to be said. Saturday Night Live did a good impersonation of Hilary, btw, having her say "My supporters are racist." The SNL demographic is fine with that, I'm sure. No news to them. It's a shame that there are still people so filled with fear that they will do anything rather than elect a black man -- even if it means electing a woman. No, ClintonCo will say or do anything to get elected. Integrity has never been their strong suit.
That's an excellent point on racism, but clear baiting from Gergen. What you recommend, similarly, to Obama that he reject every vote cast in his favor on the basis of sexism?
ashayk,
If there was a poll that said 20% of the people voting for Obama admitted they were voting against Hilary because she is a woman then yes I would say it was the honorable stance.
Regarding Gergen, if you know anything about politics and David Gergen you know that he is one of the last people on the planet you could accuse of ulterior motives. Gergen is a republican who served as counselor to Clinton after monica *because* he is perceived as ethically above reproach and Clinton needed some credibility. So the only basis on which you could accuse someone like Gergen of "baiting" as opposed to speaking what he actually believes is because you dont like is words. He has absolutely no history of charged polarizing behavior.
Well, then all that's missing is that poll because 20% may be too small a number in that case.
As for Gergen, I agree he's not part of the regular standing army Republican smear machine, a la Rove, but he's no objective journalist either.
Here he is distorting Obama's response to a question on the surge:

He's done similarly to statements by Ron Paul.
He's not Jim Lehrer, he's a political operative and it is wise to always question the motives of one.
Likewise, should Obama reject the voters that vote for him *because* of his race? You can't have one without the other.
Can you honestly say that the entire AA vote for Obama isn't because he shares the same skin color?
Give me a break.
