I submitted a link to a free online textbook on Algorithms and Data Structures with Object Oriented Design Patterns in RUBY . . . didn't make it to the front page, not a single comment, not a single point . . . one would think I had submitted to an MBA news site, as opposed to a site directed to HACKERS.MRHhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15165683716577092493noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8641429817507217988.post-68406627905695974332008-04-30T20:44:00.000-04:002008-04-30T20:44:00.000-04:00Hey Hank, Not EVERYTHING sucks. There are enablers: things like Heroku make it easier (or better, or different) to build other things. But a lot of the other things are really time-sinks that don't seem to be providing either productivity or new solutions to actual problems (e.g. Facebook/MySpace, which I still feel is like a mediocre solution to the problem of not having a phonebook for email and single online identity based on that).

I'm not saying that people shouldn't be building what interests them, but I don't know if there's some kind of feedback loop or bias which is getting people really excited about increasing the ease with which desktop widgets are created.Justin D-Zhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00750103692083796024noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8641429817507217988.post-63988098917476640322008-04-30T14:01:00.000-04:002008-04-30T14:01:00.000-04:00@anonymous,Indeed. For example www.mint.com.

I for myself work on a startup which will live of subscription fees for the service. But I share your confusion of the business model behind many services that allow us to blog, comment, twit etc. It seems everybody around me right now is so busy with commenting or following each others blogs/comments that there is not so much productivity left.Fabianhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/03218525081843151427noreply@blogger.com
