I would imagine that the front end probably took somewhere between .5 and 1.5 man years, to be generous. The magic is the ability to deliver the core mapping services, which were not developed by apple, That is even more pronounced in the new mapping services, in geolocation technology etc which Apple does not have. To put it bluntly, writing UIs in OSX just isnt the hard part.

Hank, I think you need to do a little bit more res...

Hank, I think you need to do a little bit more research here. As far as I remember, Steve said they wrote the Maps front end - I think I even remember him saying Google were impressed (to Mossberg). I feel the need each other like Intel and Apple are increasingly reliant on each other. Apple is like a showcase for Google and Intel. Intel said so themselves, and gives Apple special treatment. So does Google. Google has no control over what it's hardware 'partners' do with Android. But it knows Apple will build showcase apps using Google clients. Heck Google even went so far as to specially encode YouTube videos for iPhone using Quicktime. Remember how Jobs stated it after iPhone launch. Something like, 'We can just get them to encode it in Quicktime or something'. That shows you how much influence Apple has with Google.
